Are there any tips on relieving extreme muscle pain after a workout?

I strength train with a personal trainer once a week and per my request, she kicks my buttootie. I’ve been VERY sore for 2 days now and have even had a hard time walking. Any pain reliever tips?
I LIKE to feel sore, but not this sore…
I usually take hot baths with soothing salts that work REALLY well, but only for about 15 minutes after my bath. Maybe I need a hot tub…

Chosen Answer:

The best tip for relieving muscle pain after a workout is probably the first thing that you wouldn’t think of…..

Work out again.

The reason your muscles feel sore after a workout is the build up of lactic acid in your muscles and the best way to get rid of that lactic acid is to work those same muscles again as soon as possible.

If you were to do the obvious and take a few days off until the soreness wears off, you would be doing yourself a disservice, letting the lactic acid sit in your muscles and continue your soreness longer than it needs to. In actuality you should work out again as soon as possible, which will acclimate your muscles to the work and reduce the amount of lactic acid that your muscles produce in response to tearing and breakdown.

I know it sounds counter-productive, but this honestly is the best remedy. After a few days of working out, you will feel amazing after a long workout.

  1. steam bath or sauna

  2. Stretch in the sauna and get a massage.

  3. hot bath

  4. LOTS of water, protein helps you recover, and stretching periodically, and especially before bed, or a nap. Baths, hot showers, massages, and spas preferably with jets can also help a great deal

  5. you have to stretch to relieve the acids in your muscles.

  6. I hope you are stretching. Anyways, try not to work out so much. Percocets, Darvocets, Vicodin are a true life saver. Also, massages help as well.

  7. take a long nap
bath in hot water itll relive the muscles

  8. Just take a warm.hot bath and stretch afterwards. Whatever you do do not just lay or sit around..

  9. You can take pain pills.

    or take a steam bath!

i always do one of those two things!

    hope this helped!

  10. beer ,some mary jane, and three norcos

  11. It depends where it is I suppose.
My thighs were super sore a week ago from working out and I went in the hottub and took baths and nothing honestly helped which surprised me.
Even though I find it unbearable to even go back to working out until the pains gone it actually helps even though that sounds off. Maybe not a lot of work, but just some and you’ll feel a difference in a few hours. If not, maybe try an ice pack or relax.

  12. take a cold bath or rub HOT AND COLD over your sore muscles. OR sleep it off.

  13. Hot pack and then cold ice pack. You can also try massaging the tendons to loose it up and relax them a bit. Take some Tylenol and seriously take breaks workout one day break the other, tell her your problem and you may want to reschedule. You just need a break when it’s that bad, it will heal, but you wanna take care of it. Good luck. Been there, done that, it sucks. Stretch and wiggle.

  14. I recently bought the large Battle Creek Thermaphore Arthritis Pad for extremely sore feet, knees, and back. Man, I won’t ever go back to anything else after this. It really heats up and provides moist penetrating heat to your muscles so that they feel great for days. It’s maximum relief. You can get really great deals on it if you shop around on the Internet.

    Work out again.

  16. A good long soak in a hot bath with some epsom salts added, the epsom salt helps take the soreness away. You can find epsom salt at most any drug store. Take any over the counter inflammatory, like motrin, aspirin, Excedrin. Do stretches after your workout helps also. You can also do the stretching after your hot soak.

  17. In my most recent Mens Health magazine, it said many athletes that weight train swear by the hot cold shower. Get in and take your normal hot shower after the workout to clean for about 5 minutes, then for the next 5 minutes or so switch for one minute to as cold as you can stand it(focusing the stream of water on the most worked muscle groups/areas). go back to hot for a minute, and repeat, ending on cold. The hot serves to relax the muscle and dilate blood vessels increasing circulation and the cold causes circulation in skeletal muscles to slow and helps your heart pump blood through your body. This rotation of hot cold. dilates then contracts your blood vessels, which facilitates circulation, which promotes recovery

That along with a proper warm up and cool down period and stretching should help considerably.

  18. Well, taking an Epsom salt bath helps for sure…Also, I’ve seen this thing on t.v. where after intense training and stunt routines, cheerleaders will go soak in an ice water bath…no clue why…they say it helps with muscle soreness…also, my husband has told me, immediately after a workout, eat 2 heaping spoonfuls of peanut butter…supposedly it helps replace the proteins in you muscles and prevents some of the soreness…sounded silly to me, but I tried it and figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a try, and honestly, I wasn’t as sore the next day, like I’d been the days before…hopefully this helps…

Feel better and good job for putting forth the effort to be fit and healthy!!

  19. A common misconception is to stretch prior to working out which can actual cause muscle injury because your muscles are “cold”.

    1. Make sure you are properly stretching following your workout.

    2. Make sure you are keeping hydrated during, and after your workout. A good way to judge how much water you have lost during a workout is to weigh yourself before and after a workout. The amount of weight lost during a single workout is how much fluid you need to take back in.

    3. You can add supplements to your exercise regimen. Some to consider are CLA and Creatine.

    4. Warm baths with epsom salt will help the muscles to relax. If you have injured the muscle use ice for the first 24 hours followed by heat.

    5. Massage and acupuncture are helpful for extreme muscle soreness. Have a loved one gently massage the sore area.

    6. Yoga and pilates are wonderful exercises to lengthen the muscles aiding in greater flexibility and something you may consider adding to your workout routine.

I hope this information is helpful. Remember the old adage no pain no gain.
