which one of my doctors should I talk to about this?

I have two doctors I see on a regular basis. A Psychiatrist which prescribes me my meds based on my depression and bi-polar needs, and I also see a Primary Care Doctor. I was recently hospitalized for several days and the doctor in the hospital added a new medication called Soma and I think the generic version of that is Carisoprodol. My question is which I believe this is a muscle relaxer. Which one of my doctors should I talk to about continuing this medication and for them to prescribe it? Would it be something a Psych Doc Would more likely prescribe or a family care doctor?

Chosen Answer:

I took Paxil for depression years ago and had horrible side effects when my body started to reject the drug. I didn’t eat or sleep for a week straight! Now there is a commercial on TV that talks about how there is a huge lawsuit against the drug company that made Paxil. Women who were pregnant and took Paxil were having baby’s born with birth defects.

Do your own research and NEVER take a doctors word for it and follow blindly. This is your life, your body, and your health. NO ONE is more of an expert than YOU =)

is there a statin that does not cause muscle pain?

I took myself off Lipitor after 18 months as I developed muscle pain severe enough to wake me in the night.
Do all statins have this side effect or are there some that don’t?
I do know that ideally it should be my GP
that I ask. However, I live in a rural area and I am stuck with a GP who:
a) examined me for PR bleeding and told me it was “nothing to worry about” 5 days before I had half my cancerous colon removed
b) didn’t monitor my electrolytes balance when I was on diuretics so I spent 2 weeks in a cardiac unit when I collapsed from potassium deficiency
c) spent 3 days telling me my 7 year old son did not have appendicitis, following which I took him to casualty where he
was admitted immediately for perforated appendix.
In these circumstances I want to be as informed as possible BEFORE I see my GP

Chosen Answer:

After reading the write up in the Daily Mail, I have now stopped taking my statin. Mine caused sleeplessness, headaches etc. The Lancet are now saying that statins only benefit men under a certain age and have no benefits at all for women. I am now looking to lower my cholesterol with diet i.e. porridge, almonds, fruit and veg, red wine, garlic and exercise. Also try to grill meats and if you have to use the fryingpan, use a spray oil or olive oil.
I think Doctors are gradually waking up to the fact that statins are being pushed by the big drug companies as they make them milllions each year yet it is being proven that statins do not stop heart attacks and strokes.
Good Luck

Can a sore back be something more then muscle pain?

Boyfriend has been having pain that feels like muscle pain for a few weeks now. It turns off and on it seems. Somedays its worse then other days and then it will appear to be getting better then it will be bad again. It’s on the lower right side of his back. Could this be something on the inside besides muscle pain?

Chosen Answer:

Sounds like a probably brain tumor to me.

Protein supplements, muscle pain and possible kidney issue?

I’ve been having muscle pain on the left and right side of my body in the ribcage area underneath my arms (lats) but the pain sometimes shoots into the front of my ribcage too. At first my doctor and I have come to the conclusion that the pain is muscle strain from working out. So I stopped working out about two weeks ago, pain went away, so I started taking protein supplements again 3 days ago but without working out and it seems the pain is starting to come back.

Does this sound like some sort of Kidney issue?

Chosen Answer:

Hard to comment on the protein issue – just watch out for the psychological angle in all this. Psychology can cause ungodly amounts of pain and distress – real pain too. And the pain will come and go without making much sense.

As you get older and older, you begin to realize that one heck of a lot of pain and distress isn’t “real” – it does hurt – but it’s some strange psychological deal the body gets into. You’ll notice that going to the doctor and getting a little reassurance will ‘cure” the pain – but it will come back later….

There’s a Dr. Sarno who wrote one very interesting book about this called “healing backpain” – you can get it for about nothing off of Amazon if you buy it used.

legality of buying OTC medications (OTC in mexico,) from an online mexican pharamcy, to be delivered to US?

There is a medication called carisoprodol. It is a schedule IV controlled substance in my state (GA)

I have a prescription for 90 of them each 30 days, for neck pain due to muscular pain in my neck. However, I lost the bottle of medication (I actually did, no lie.) So now I’m stuck without any of them. I don’t want to talk to have to pay for the medication without insurance, because that’s a pain in the butt (my ins. only covers a single prescription of each thing to be filled once each 30 days, so I’ll have to pay a lot for it.)

BUT! Turns out carisoprodol is legal in mexico over the counter (like advil is here in the states.) I want to know about the legality of buying it from an online pharmacy (like you can buy advil from cvs.com,) and having it shipped to my house.

Is this a problem? Is it illegal? What would the repercussions be if I were caught and it is illegal?

Can someone tell me about their experience with this sort of thing (I know people buy Viagra while in Mexico, then bring it back, but not about buying it from like cvs.mx [which doesn't exist].) Or if someone does post a response, can they add a link to something from a .gov website?

Chosen Answer:

You’d be charged just the same as any other drug smuggler. You would be obtaining restricted drugs illegally, and every cop and judge would believe that you either took too much medicine, or that you sold your medicine.

It will be cheaper to buy the medicine without insurance.

Muscle Pain.?

Silly me did the splits without stretching or warming up. Right then and there the muscle right below my glut on my right leg had severe pain. It hurt to walk. It’s about 3 days after and it is still sore when I stretch and even attempt to do anything like the splits. Please help me with treatment and an idea of when it will be better. Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

I think you are referring to your hamstring. You are talking about the back of your leg correct? It sounds like a hamstring pull. Rest it and apply heat. Take a pain reliever. Do light stretches. Sit on the floor with your legs out straight and reach towards your toes. Don’t stretch too much, just enough to keep it loose. It will probably hurt for a few days, but will feel better with each day. If it doesn’t feel better within a week go to a doctor, it could be a tear and not a pull.

How long does it take to become addicted to Soma(carisoprodol )?

I have been taking soma for 3 weeks on the dot. I have only taken them at bedtime and I have not taken them every day… but pretty close… Over the last few days i have not taken as many as i normally do(1&1/2 – 2 each time) and have been taking Claritin-D 24h for allergies… I have had very high levels of anxiety, hands have been sweating, kind of cloudy headed, heart palpitations, racing heart beat….. Is it possible that the decrease in Soma has done this even though i have not been on them that long? Or could it just be the large dose of pseudoephedrine in the Claritin?
To clarify.. I was only taking about 2 a day.

Chosen Answer:

It could be a mixture of both. Psuedoephedrine makes me VERY shaky and anxious when I take it. Soma is addictive… I’m betting more towards the psuedoephedrine. Go buy some regular claratin and if your nose gets stopped up get some vicks sinex, works great!

Common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with pseudoephedrine therapy include: CNS stimulation, sleeplessness, nervousness, excitability, dizziness and anxiety. Infrequent ADRs include: tachycardia and/or palpitations. Rarely, pseudoephedrine therapy may be associated with hallucinations, arrhythmias, hypertension, seizures and ischemic colitis;[5] as well as severe skin reactions known as recurrent pseudo-scarlatina, systemic contact dermatitis, and nonpigmenting fixed drug eruption
