How long does it take for whiplash to go away? How do you alleviate the pain?

I was rear-ended by a car going about 25 mph last week. There is still so much pain in my neck and back, especially my left shoulder blade. Neither ice nor heat help. I’m taking a prescription pain-killer and anti-inflammatory medicine for the muscles, but the pain isn’t going away. What to do?!

Chosen Answer:

Whiplash can be difficult to treat.

Sometimes the major symptom(s) won’t hit till much later as in weeks or months!

In the mean time, you may benefit from some passive range of motion several times a day to keep the ligaments from healing “in-correctly”.

I have been taking fish oil supp. Could I be having symptons if high levels of mercury?

I have muscle tightness, some pain from muscles and tingling in feet and hands.

Chosen Answer:

These don’t sound like mercury-specific symptoms. See the Wikipedia reference. The WebMD reference is also quite interesting.

From ASTDR:
“Tests are available to measure mercury levels in the body. Blood or urine samples are used to test for exposure to metallic mercury and to inorganic forms of mercury. Mercury in whole blood or in scalp hair is measured to determine exposure to methylmercury. Your doctor can take samples and send them to a testing laboratory.”

Also according to WebMD, If you are avoiding fish and seafood because of fear of mercury contamination, you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

You haven’t revealed why you are taking fish oil supplements, nor in what dosages. If this has been prescribed by your doctor, tell the doctor of the symptoms.

What can I do to make muscle pain go away?

I am a competitive swimmer and I need to be at swim practice everyday. My muscles have been sore for about 2 weeks and I am getting very irritated, It hurts all over. I am talking head toes and everything in between. How can I make the pain go away with out taking a break from swimming?

Chosen Answer:

People who exercise and train a LOT take very good care of their muscles for the critical hour or two right after they stop exercising. They apply cold compresses to the tendon areas they expect to be most painful, and they immediately take an anti-inflamatory such as Advil or even Naproxen (12 hours). Anti-oxidant vitamins are also used such as Vitamin A,C,E, so take a multi-vitamin along, and bring some extra chewable vitamin C tablets along with you.

If you’ve been sore for two weeks, and it’s not going away, talk to your doctor. A short course of a corticosteroid may reduce the inflamation quickly and long enough for your body to heal up. This is not the same as taking “anabolic steroids.”

Finally, even though you’re swimming, you can still tape up the area right below your kneecap, and your ankles, part of your elbow, etc… to help support your muscle movements and protect your tendons from tears. If sports tape doesn’t stick, use duct tape, and overlap it.

Do you ride a bus to the swimming pool? If so, make sure you really stretch out, especially your hips, before you swim. And take another stretch before riding home, and after… Keep limber.

When you get home, three times a week, take an epsom salts bath. It really works.

Good luck!

How to get rid of muscle pain after gym?

The pain after the morning work out isn’t that bad but after the evening work out my leg muscles become so stiff that I can hardly walk properly. I usually end up sleeping at 9 pm or something. I tried taking some pain killers, but it hardly works. I didn’t felt any relief.

Chosen Answer:

You have to stretch before you go to bed. You do certain things with your legs when you point your foot straight that pretty much locks up your legs. You have to stretch and you can also ice where you are real sore.

what would make a dog with neck soft tissue injury to now loose muscle mass. Is something overlooked?

took him to the vets. they said its a soft tissue injury in his neck. steroids, muscle relaxers and pain med not working. now noticing his neck is getting smaller like hes loosing muscle mass and panting alot and peeing alot for like 2 min strait. He is still in alot of pain. The medicine is not working. I am taking him back tomorrow. could this be something else other than a neck injury?

Chosen Answer:

Side effects – of anti-inflammatory steroids can be numerous. In dogs and less often in cats, the most commonly seen side effects include an increase in thirst and appetite, followed by an increase in urine production, and possible weight gain.

In dogs, panting can be a common side effect, and sometimes mood alterations can occur. These mood changes may make the dog irritable and sometimes can result in a “nice” dog suddenly snapping at its owners. Often times, tapering the dose of steroids down, will result in a decrease of the side effects.

Steroids
Steroids are no longer the first choice recommendation for use as anti-inflammatory in dogs. Steroids lead to loss of muscle mass, which is a big problem in dogs. causes wasting, so to add something that will only increase the loss of muscle mass is not a good line of defense to follow. Natural anti-inflammatories, such as those listed on the Medication and Exercise Schedule page should be the first choice.

I’ve been stretching for my splits the first day was okay but then the second I had pains in my leg muscle the part under my leg and a little bit in my thigh and I need help to relieve this pain so I can reach my goal of splits anyone have any suggestions. I might be taking ballet classes and I want to be prepared.

Happens all the time if your muscles aren’t used to it. Try and do some light stretches to warm and loosen the muscles up. Tomorrow will be worse on your legs if you don’t.

How long does it take jogging induced muscle pain to heal?

Does anyone know? I just jogged/ran slowly for 20 whole minutes without taking a break yesterday(which is a big deal for me!-aka. i hadn’t ever done that before). and today i have pain on the sides of the very top of my legs and a little on my upper back and arms. does anyone know how long it will take to heal approximately? I hope only a day or two! :(

Chosen Answer:

Exercise pains are really common. There’s no need to worry; the aches and pain should go away within a day or two. It depends on you and how adjusted your muscles are to exercise and its after effects. Just take it easy. I’ve found that heat packs work well for me. I heat them in the microwave and then move it around my body (e.g. 15 mins on each leg, 20 mins on back, 10 mins on each arm). Keep comfy and rest easy.
Also.. Stretching can prevent a majority of these aches. So next time remember to take about 10 mins to bend and flex :p

Parents: What if you found out your teen/young adult was misusing or self medicating with pain killers?

What would you do?
How would you handle it?

Say your 18+ living at home was using pain killers to treat a back muscle/severe pain issue but was taking them everyday and getting more without a legit prescription.

What would you do?

Chosen Answer:

People who self medicate are doing it for a reason. If back pain is an issue, then physical therapy might be needed. You have to look at what the root of the problem is in order to address the problem and solve the self medication issue.
